Director/Teacher for Preschool Program, ages 2 to 5
The Bay Area Kinderstube (BAKS) is a German-language immersion preschool program dedicated to fostering support of the German language in the lives of children between the ages of 2 and 5 years. Our mission is to make German language development an integral part of the social-emotional, physical, and cognitive development of the child. The BAKS program seeks to stimulate language ability through play and theme-based preschool activities. The language of instruction and interaction with the children is exclusively German. BAKS does not discriminate on the basis of nationality, race or religion.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Overall administration and licensing:
To observe the daily operation of the Bay Area Kinderstube (BAKS).
To ensure that the center is in compliance with all licensing regulations and to monitor continued adherence to all licensing guidelines.
To be aware of all deficiencies or potential deficiencies that may constitute an immediate threat to children’s health and safety.
In the event that the center is found to be deficient in meeting any of the licensing requirements, the Director/Teacher has the authority to
Acknowledge receipt of deficiency notices and to take the necessary steps towards bringing the center back into compliance.
To serve as the primary liaison between the center’s staff and Board of Directors with the licensing agency.
To teach the children. All attending children need to be supervised from the time of arrival to parent pickup, both inside and outside the building.
To be aware of the principles and mission of the center and to know the needs of its children.
Together with staff, to make him/herself available for pre-arranged parent conferences every six months. Parent-teacher conferences may be arranged before or after the daily schedule or on special conference days outside the normal program hours.
To provide teachers with administrative guidance and support.
To organize and oversee regular staff meetings and report the minutes of these meetings to the Board of Directors.
To provide opportunities for in-service education for all staff.
Communication and public relations
To act as a liaison between the Board of Directors, the teaching staff, and the parents of the students.
To represent the center in all outside and community functions.
To pursue fundraising possibilities for the center’s continued operation.
To work with parents, staff, and Board Members to advertise the center and to foster public relations and student recruitment activities.
Lines of Supervision
The Director/Teacher is the primary person responsible for the operation of the center and is present during its hours of operation: Monday through Friday, 8:30 am – 5:30 pm. The Director/Teacher supervises staff and reports directly to the Board of Directors. The Board Member currently designated for employment supervision is the Board President.
An individual is eligible to hold the position of Director/Teacher by meeting all requirements listed in one of four scenarios, and, in fulfillment of the mission of the Bay Area Kinderstube, can prove fluent knowledge of the German language, which is to be used as the language of
instruction with all participating children:
Possess a high school graduate degree or GED with 15 semester units or equivalent quarter units in Early Childhood Education at an accredited or approved college or university; and has had at least four years of teaching in a licensed day care center or comparable group child care program. The educational units must include the following:
Three semester units or equivalent quarter units of the 15 units required shall be in administration or staff relations.
Twelve semester units or equivalent quarter units of the 15 units required shall include courses which cover the general areas of child growth and development or human growth and development; child, family, and community or child and family; and program/curriculum.
Possess an AA degree from an accredited or approved college or university with a major emphasis on Early Childhood Education or Child Development and at least two years of teaching experience in a licensed day care center or comparable group child care program. At least three units or equivalent quarter units must be in administration or staff relations.
Possess a Bachelor of Arts degree from an accredited or approved college or university with a major emphasis on Early Childhood Education or Child Development and at least one year of teaching experience in a licensed day care center or comparable group child care program. At least three units or equivalent quarter units must be in administration or staff relations.
Possess a Children’s Center Supervisory Permit issued by the California Commission for Teacher Preparation and Licensing.
Additional Requirements for Employment
Is a native speaker of German or can prove language mastery through documentation of German language coursework at the post-secondary level.
Proof of a completion of or concurrent enrollment in Child and Infant First Aid and CPR classes.
Complete a health screening prior to employment and take a tuberculosis test.
Evidence of eligibility to work (U.S. passport or Social Security Card and Driver’s License).
In the event that the candidate is not a U.S. citizen, provide evidence of eligibility to work in the U.S. (U.S. resident alien card (Green Card) or U.S. work permit).
